Talked with Theresa and Sukanya this morning (evening for them), and they said Rebekah had just been discharged, that she was alert, and that she was doing very well. Theresa said the plastic surgeon who had teamed up with the neurosurgeon showed her a photo he'd taken with his cell phone of the patch. She said it was hard to tell from the small photo, but it looked as though the patch was a little smaller than her palm. They stitched the patch on with waterproof sutures. They said we should know within four to six weeks whether the patch was successful or whether Rebekah would need to have a shunt placed.
The three hipsters (Noah, Thomas, and Yemima, our kiddos who had congenital hip dislocations corrected last month) got their casts changed, and the whole troupe was planning to head back home tomorrow.
Theresa's comment was "Now I'm very invested. I've learned so much." I can't tell you how much rest it gives me to know that she's there and that she's feeling confident to make the decisions that need to be made. She's very capable, and I know that she hears from God and I can trust her judgment.
So I'm enjoying my time with my family! There's my cousin's wedding, the county fair in which my nephew is pig-wrestling, the demolition derby--woo hoo! Actually, I'm a homebody and would be just as happy to chill at my parents', but it's good to get out and be a part of the community a bit again as well. The girls are riding bikes, have signed up for swimming lessons, are learning to play Wii, and are just having a wonderful time with their cousins. The month will fly by, I'm sure.
The only thing that's been a bit heavy on my heart, other than Rebekah's surgery, has been the fact that, for the first time, we're too low on funds to cover the monthly basics at SCH this month. I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that we've done 20 surgeries since March! I wish I hadn't had to leave Theresa and Sukanya to deal with that, though. We need about $4000. I'll try to schedule in a fundraiser or two while I'm here, but for the most part, we had hoped that this rather short trip would be mainly about reconnecting with family. No pressure, but thought I'd throw that out there in case anyone had been considering giving toward Rebekah's surgery and didn't get a chance.... Wanted to let you know that financial gifts would be just as appreciated now as last week. You're awesome. God bless you!
